Clinton College received a major birthday gift totaling $122,064.76 from more than a dozen donors during its Founder’s Day Convocation at Kenneth Monroe Transformation Center in Rock Hill on March 15th, 2019.
Several districts in the A.M.E. Zion Church each donated several thousand dollars to Clinton College. Other monetary gifts came from the faculty and staff, local businesses and the City of Rock Hill.
Bishop George Edward Battle Jr., who is the senior bishop of the A.M.E. Zion Church and a 1966 graduate of then-Clinton Junior College, was the keynote speaker for the event. During his speech, Bishop Battle focused on the theme “A Legacy of Faith,” citing Proverbs 13:22 which says, “A good person leaves an inheritance for their children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous.”
Bishop Battle spoke of his hesitation to attend Clinton College when he left his home of Rocky Mount, NC and wanted to turn around when he actually got to the college. But he says he chose to stay, and that decision changed his life.
“Because of Clinton College, I was able to go to Charlotte and sit on the board of big corporations where billions of dollars were being made…I had no idea Clinton College was preparing me to meet with Presidents.”
At the end of his message, Bishop Battle and the Piedmont Episcopal District presented the college with a check of $15,000 and pledged to a total of $25,000 by the end of July.
